    Professional Liability Insurance

Errors & Omissions coverage for your professional services

    What is Professional Liability Insurance?

Professional Liability Insurance, also known as Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance, protects your business if a client claims that your professional services caused them financial harm due to mistakes, negligence, or failure to perform.

Unlike General Liability which covers physical risks (bodily injury or property damage), Professional Liability specifically covers the financial consequences of your professional advice or services.

Even if you haven't made a mistake, a client can still sue you. This coverage pays for your legal defense costs as well as any settlements or judgments against you.

    Claims-Made vs. Occurrence Policies

Unlike General Liability, which is usually written on an "Occurrence" basis, Professional Liability is almost always written on a "Claims-Made" basis. Understanding this distinction is crucial to preventing coverage gaps.

    Occurrence Policy (Typical GL)

Covers claims for incidents that happen during the policy period, regardless of when the claim is actually filed. Even if you cancel the policy, you are still covered for incidents that happened while it was active.

    Claims-Made Policy (Typical E&O)

The policy must be active BOTH when the alleged mistake was made AND when the lawsuit is filed.

Warning: If you cancel a claims-made policy without purchasing "Tail Coverage," you lose protection for all past work.
