Workers Compensation Insurance
Protect your employees and your business from workplace injuries
What is Workers Compensation?
Workers compensation insurance provides coverage for employees who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses. It's required by law in most states and protects both your employees and your business.
This essential coverage pays for medical expenses, lost wages, and rehabilitation costs when an employee is injured on the job. It also protects your business from costly lawsuits related to workplace injuries.
In most states, workers compensation insurance is mandatory for businesses with employees.

Understanding Your Experience Modifier (E-Mod)
Your Experience Modification Rate (E-Mod or X-Mod) is a multiplier used to calculate your workers' compensation premium. It compares your claims history to other businesses in your industry of a similar size.
E-Mod < 1.0 (Credit Mod)
Your claims history is better than average. You receive a discount on your premiums. For example, a 0.85 E-Mod means you pay 15% less than the industry average.
E-Mod > 1.0 (Debit Mod)
Your claims history is worse than average. You pay a surcharge on your premiums. A 1.25 E-Mod means you pay 25% more than the industry average.
How to Control Your Workers' Comp Costs
- 1
Implement a Safety Program
Preventing accidents is the best way to keep your E-Mod low. Document safety training, conduct regular hazard inspections, and enforce safety rules.
- 2
Return-to-Work Programs
Bringing injured employees back to light-duty work as soon as medically cleared reduces the "lost time" portion of a claim, which heavily impacts your E-Mod.
- 3
Pay-As-You-Go Workers' Comp
Instead of estimating annual payroll and facing a massive audit bill at the end of the year, Pay-As-You-Go ties your premiums directly to your actual payroll each cycle.
The 1099 Contractor Trap
Many business owners assume they don't need workers' comp if they only hire independent contractors (1099s). This is one of the most dangerous (and expensive) misconceptions in commercial insurance.
The Audit Surprise
If your contractors don't carry their own workers' comp insurance, your insurance carrier will likely charge YOU for their exposure during your annual audit. Always collect Certificates of Insurance (COIs) from subcontractors.
Misclassification Risk
The NC Industrial Commission determines who is an employee, not your tax forms. If you control how, when, and where a contractor works, the state may classify them as an employee—making you liable for their injuries.
The Solution
Require all 1099 contractors to provide proof of their own workers' comp coverage, or carry a "Ghost Policy" (a policy that excludes the owner but provides a COI) before they start working for you.
